PostgreSQL

Ok, so this isn't supposed to turn into a geek log, but I just wanted to mention that I helped contribute to the development of the next version of PostgreSQL. To say PostgreSQL is an open source database, is like saying a Ferrari is a car. PostgreSQL is the most feature rich open source database available, and the next version (8.0) which is currently under development, is going to be a HUGE step forward.

Not only are we looking at speed improvements, and feature improvements such as tablespaces (!), but there's also going to be a Windows native version. Now, I'm not a huge fan of Windows, but having a Windows native version is a big step. It allows more people access to this database, and potentially introduces them to an amazingly good open source product. And for me it means the possibility of moving forward pretty well with PostgreSQL as the database we want to standardize onto at my job, from SQL Server and Oracle. Which would be nice.

So all I did was to find a bug in the import process when importing from a unix created dump file into the Windows version. Someone else fixed it (thanks very much) and my "contribution" was minimal at best. But it was just such a pleasant process...
